WordCrafts Theatrical Press Offers Free Perusal Copy to Community Theater Companies Durng December.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TULLAHOMA, TN – December 5, 2011 – It’s December, the time of the year when community theater play selection committees start beating their heads against the wall, trying to come up with plays that are new enough to challenge their actors while still being familiar enough to draw an audience. Oscar Wilde is a fantastic playwright and his plays certainly draw a crowd, but let’s face it, you can only doThe Importance of Being Earnest so many times. So, what if there was a ‘new’ Oscar Wilde play; one that was familiar to your audience, but new to your actors?

WordCrafts Theatrical Press offers, for your consideration, Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, a fresh adaption of Wilde’s only novel, by American playwright Mike Parker.

An adherent to the pseudo-religion of aestheticism, a philosophy that worships beauty above all things, Wilde used his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray to explore the breadth and depth of that peculiar faith. In the end, Oscar Wilde, along with his creation, Dorian Gray, discovered that beauty is a gift, but only for a season. “The pulse of joy that beats in us at twenty becomes sluggish,” Lord Henry asserts. “Our limbs fail, our senses rot. We degenerate into hideous puppets.” King Solomon, perhaps, said it better, “Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.”

In adapting Dorian Gray for the stage, Parker has taken the literary license of recasting the genders of several pivotal characters, most notably that of Dorian Gray. Those changes result in a remarkably fresh rendition of this retelling of the Faust myth. Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray also offers some very strong roles for women, which is always a plus.
